In her new work, Andrea Nagl investigates transformation and energy processes across micro- and global scales: from the Brownian motion of individual clay particles to orogeny. This investigation materializes in an engagement with the silent actors of deep time: clay minerals. As phyllosilicates like Smectite or Illite, they undergo a perpetual, cyclical identity shift—at times the suffering object of current and pressure, at times the acting subject that, through flocculation and diagenesis, itself creates new geological realities. This intrinsic role reversal, from fleeting suspension to durable rock and back again, radically questions the linearity of geological history. The work follows these non-human actors on their journey, dissolving the presumed boundary between object and subject, between passive material and active former, within the Earth's ceaseless metamorphosis.

geologisches Schichtmodell

Building on her previous project becoming [stone], she here turns toward the elemental cycles of matter. At the center are clay minerals, tiny agents that move through the full spectrum of geological existence and states of becoming.

This ongoing metamorphosis finds its resonance in the exhibition’s digital realm: as a physical object dissolves into a hovering point cloud in augmented reality, the countless, fleeting motions of clay particles gradually condense into a tangible, enduring rock formation. These parallel processes - digital dispersion and geological consolidation - unfold as shifts in space and time, reflecting on how materiality and narrative are transformed, translated, and held as they pass between different modes of existence.
